Rock Aid Armenia: “Smoke On The Water”… This is one of the many cases that unfortunate tragedy resulted in a truly caring collaboration of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Legends coming together to help those in need.
On the 7th day of December 1988, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook North-Western Armenia to its core. Tens of thousands were killed and hundreds of thousands were left homeless.
it was Jon Dee, the subsequent founder of Rock Aid Armenia who was asked to collect footage for Television out of the disaster zone.
All that kept running through his mind was … “I have to do something.”
Jon’s Rock Aid Armenia came together the following year to raise money for those devastated by the quake.
Assembling the lineup consisting of the top recording artists in hard rock and heavy metal was easier than expected, everyone was most eager to step in and help.
Performing Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water” on “The Earthquake Album” are as follows:
Ian GIllan, Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord of Deep Purple, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Alex Lifeson of RUSH, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, Paul Rodgers of Bad Company, Keith Emerson of ELP, Chris Squire and Geoff Downes of YES … And Bryan Adams
The song was released worldwide and was hugely successfully in raising the funds to rebuild peoples lives but also a children’s music school that was located in the heart of the Armenian earthquake zone. Today the new music school teaches over two hundred students per year!
Smoke On The Water for Rock Aid Armenia was recorded at the historic Metropolis Studios in Chiswick, London.
